I have what I thought was a flower sprouting out of the ground around July. Now it is over six foot and the thick stem and branches look as though it is a tree. I have definitely not planted it. I await any replies with interest but in any case it needs to come out as it is not suitable where it is

Could it be a goat willow? They pop up everywhere.

Thanks for that. I will dig it out when I start moving plants around this weekend.

Looks like a large growing tree. It's best to remove sooner then later.
