My son lives next to an abandoned Orchard, I noticed the fruits shown on the attached photograph. They are on a tree, and about the size of a cherry, but have a large seed inside instead of a stone. Does anyone know what it is and if it is edible. If they are I would like to make a pie out of some of them. All of the rest of the plants in the orchard are edible, so I hope this one is.
Upon further investigation I think the two answers to the above question were right, they are crab apples, when I last visited the orchard there were very few of them left, but I managed to gather a couple of handfuls which I made into a passable crab apple crumble (see photo). Thanks again for the answers.

Thanks for the information, I have some doubts whether they are crab apples as when I tasted one it was a bit too sweet in my humble opinion to be a crab apple. What I am going to do is to pick some and try making a pie, and see how it tastes, I will let you know.
I will try making some jelly as well.
By the way sorry to be late saying thank you, I have been on holiday for a few days.

They look like crab apples to me. Have you tried tasting one? I don't think they would make a very nice pie, perhaps jelly would be better.
