when do you recommend I prune my honeysuckle. I have no idea of the variety. All I know is that it has big flowers. All the growth is at the top and the lower stems bare

It is definitely honeysuckle and not a clematis variety, is it? Its just your description of big flowers...

I only trim it to keep in bounds when it's in active growth - late Spring - Summer.
