I have seen many a question on dividing Hosta, when and how. Aside from propagating the plant elsewhere, trading or giving one to a friend, is there any other reason to do this? I also get the impression that this is done on a yearly basis by many gardeners; if so is it necessary? I have never divided my Hosta and have never seen a reason to do so since they spread and leaf out so nicely. Am I missing out on something?

No, you're not missing anything, Loosestrife - Hostas don't need to be divided unless they're growing with restricted root space, say in a pot or trough. They 're perfectly happy with being left well alone for years. Probably a lot of questions because people might want to increase their stock, or the plants they've got get too large for the space they're in - we mostly have much smaller gardens here than you do over there! And people don't always choose the right variety for the right space...

Yeah, thats true. Mine nearly always outgrow their spaces within a year or two! But I am learning. :)

I've never felt the urge to divide a hosta - I have about 40 at the moment, all in pots. I think they look best when they fill the pot and I pot them up into a bigger pot if they start to struggle. Slugs and snails stopped them overgrowing in my last garden - I'm still trying to find the balance in my tiny yard.

« When should I plant out lupin plants. They are about 4 to 6" high
The only reason I do it, is because they spread so rampantly and I don't have the garden space.
