Depends where you live - if its northerly and its already cold, you'll have to wait till spring, but if its not cold nor northerly, then you can start now. The problem is removing the existing plants and keeping them somewhere, then topping up the soil and replacing the plants as quickly as possible. You've not said what the plants are, how old they are, nor where you are, so its difficult to give solid advice.

A photo would help, so we can understand the problem better.

I would pot the plants all up, give them a drink, place in a dry place for the winter, and work on the lawn when the weather is suitable - or when you feel like it.
Every bit you do doesnt have to be done again.

This seems like a huge task for one person. I just spent the best part of the day transplanting two shrubs - preparing the beds - holes, uprooting, etc. How many plants/shrubs do you have to move? Sounds like you need a truckload of compost. Is there still a steep slope into the flowerbed? Is it constantly wet & muddy? A picture or two would definitely help.

also if it is a lot of soil depth then buying quality topsoil would be better than just compost, cheaper too I'd have thought.
once lifted and temporary potted into the biggest pots you can give them you can then refill with soil etc. but leave it a month to allow the soil to settle with winter rains etc. if you plant straight away the soil will settle and you may find you need to top up again.

Hi Guys,
Thank you all for replies, a photo would not help at mo as the beds are full of weeds and leaves, workmen only left a week ago, been going on for 4 months, work on house also.

Going away for 4days break from it all, so ready to start on my return, to answer some of your questions, I live in the south, with south facing garden, moved here 4years ago, garden had only Laurel and Yew bushes, once I cleared, I was able to plant, so only planted all, about 3 and half years.
thanks re top soil not compost,Also, yes quite muddy, also thanks re letting the soil settle before re planting.
