Hello everyone. About four months ago I planted some white cyclamen in my window box, and they have been fantastic ever since (very healthy, lots of flowers, no wilting etc). About three days ago some of the flowers started to wilt. I would be really grateful for any suggestions as to what might be happening. (I live in London, the window box is more-or-less south-facing, and it is on the ground floor.)

As long as they have been watered, it's probably the end of this year's flowering. They should flower again next Autumn.

Try to snap the flowers off near the corm as possible, it helps to stop them rotting

recently I neded some small cut flowers( my cyclamen are the small ones) and was amazed that cyclamen flowers in a tiny vase lasted about a week!

Thank you both for your replies. I thought the cyclamen might last all through the winter (I was told that they do), so I'm a bit sad at losing them sooner than I expected. Never mind, I shall look forward to their return next year!

If you just nip out the ones that go over, you should find new buds if you look between the leaves, mine usually last until about march.

But if these are in a window box outside then they won't last the winter. This type of cyclamen is not hardy and will not withstand freezing temperatures or overhead wet for any length of time. I would suggest planting them in pots to keep in a COOL and airy room in the house. A north or east facing windowcill would be good.

if you leave one or two flowers on the plant you may well get seed, which germinates quite easily. Its lovely to see how the stem corkscrews up so as to actually drill the seed into the soil.

Actually, the seeds are distributed by ants, so the stem is just bringing them down to where the ants can get them, and the birds can't!

I have some hederifolia in pots outside and they have seeded and filled the pots - I don't think there were any ants there as they are on a quite high shelf - never seen a single ant up there. . But there are lots in the garden so hopefully they'll spread the seeds of the ones in the ground.

Ants like the sugary coating of the seeds so are one of the ways in which cyclamen distribute their seeds. Assuming no ants/wasps etc you will have noticed how the cyclamen stem rolls down in a tight spiral to the centre of the plant with the newly formed seed head. It stays tightly coiled until the seed is ripe the following summer and then the stem extends again to deposite the seeds a few inches away from the original corm.
