i have a three tier garden im just about to fence the top one off would it be ok to lay an old carpet on top before i fill it in to prevent weeds

Yes - but make sure it is hessian-backed! and whatever you fill in with will get seeds arriving in it after no time at all anyway!

Yes,it will prevent weed growth whilst its on there. The thing is are there weed seeds in there already? If so as soon as you remove it they will start to grow! I tried this on an allotment but it had been left too long and apart from some children burning the carpet, there were already too many seeds underneath it. Its worth trying anyway. Good Luck!
