The front garden in early May

I have been busy planting in the front garden over the last few days mainly due to the fact that you could hardly stand up in the back garden with the strong winds. The south facing front was calm and warm while the back was gale force for six days.
Here are a few photos taken over the bank holiday weekend.

The front door pots

Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ growing in a large pot under the office window

Happily growing in the gravel, Cistus × pulverulentus ‘Sunset’

Arenaria montana, a new addition

Erodium Bishop’s Form

Lithodora diffusa ‘Heavenly Blue’ now forming a large mat

Phlox subulata ‘McDaniels Cushion’ another new addition

Chives, this is the clump we use for the kitchen

Geranium ’Johnson’s Blue’, this one flowers very early in the warm front garden

Erodium glandulosum ‘Spanish Eyes’

Acer palmatum ’Skeeter’s Broom’ a recent purchase from Morrisons now planted in a sheltered spot with protection from the mid day sun and winds

This is the view from the front door

I am pleased with how the shrubs and trees have come on, they give some privacy without blocking out too much sunlight. I will never regret having dug up the lawn and putting down gravel as the front garden is so much easier to look after now.

Your garden looks wonderful Annella and SO much more interesting than a lawn. You have some lovely plants, beautifully photographed. My Arenaria Montana used to look like yours but has been going steadily downhill. I love your Phlox and Chives which look so pretty in flower :o))

Wow, that looks tremendous doesn't it. Love the way you've managed to achieve some privacy there too. Can't believe that solanum in full bloom already, it's so pretty, what a lovely place to grow one! Fab! My house is also a tale of two climates, but the front has been the cold side (SE facing) until today.....now it's the back again!!

A wonderful choice of plants, and I do so agree about gravel instead of lawn, it all looks perfect as usual.

It's very nice Ann. Nice to be in the garden over the holiday. And I'm pleased you got rid of the grass. It's so much work to look after. It's all looking very calm and restful with you.

Hi Ann

Your garden is lovely as usual and all looks so established, even your new plants. You must definately have green fingers. Looking forward to our meeting up sometime, then you can show me it in real life.

This area looks lovely...
did you use a weed suppressing membrane under the gravel ?

6 May, 2011

Yes under most of it TT. I put newspapers around some of the existing plants and ones that I wanted to keep damp like the Arum lily. All the plants seem to thrive now and it looks so much better than the dry ugly clay did before. This part of my garden has only been watered once in eight weeks so that's another bonus with the gravel.

Thanks... successful outcome ..
I'll also add this to WSM :o)
