I'm asking for a friend if anyone can ID which Jap. Anemone these seedheads are from.
Giant Japanese anemone seed heads! The inset (to same scale as the main pic) shows normal-sized white anemone japonica 'Honorine Jobert' seed heads - these, from a neighbour's garden (with permission!), are enormous. I didn't see them in flower and wonder if anyone knows what variety they come from - maybe a double? Before they expand when fully ripe, the heads are quite knobbly, unlike the normal kind, which are relatively smooth and only about 1 cm in diameter.

Yes, I think she knows that which is why she put the inset pic in for comparison & also the 2nd pic showing the expanded ones.
Her question is about these others which have appeared & are different as well as larger.

I don't think there is a difference. I have 4 different ones in the garden and they all start off small and tight from the central disc of the flower. the flowers when fresh don't have any marked difference in central disc size either. the double one I have produces few seeds than the open one any way..
you will just have to have a look next time when they are in flower. :o)

I passed on your reply to my friend & she says: "These are growing right amongst Honorine but are far larger, so am pretty sure they're something else - they are about 4 times larger even when they're really hard, before they even begin to fluff out."
It will be interesting to see what comes from the seeds.

they are only larger because they have started to disperse. they start small and tight and open out as they age ready to be blown by the wind.
