Verbena Bonariensis. If I take cuttings from the new shoots on last year's long stem are they likely to root? I don't want to pot them up if it's a waste of time. I only found three seedlings to grow on this year.

Yes I think they should root. nothing but to give it ago and if it works let every one else know.

I'd put several shoots around the edge of a 3" diameter pot. keep just moist and pop a poly bag over to help conserve moisture and try to keep them just warm so as to encourage root growth.

Thanks SBG, I'll give it a go.....seems a shame to cut the stems down and lose all the new growth.

Keep an eye out as the seasons progress - I've often found seedlings in May and June...

I always cut mine back in the autumn as they re-seed readily and come up like weeds all over the flower bed. When they are a decent size, I pot them up, and then cut them back to make them strong and bushy to plant out the next season to replace some of the old woody plants.

How do I say thanks?
