Is there any way to prevent the browning of the edges the the leaves of our bird of paradise? Or do I just have to keep cutting them off/back?

The site looks good for Bird of Paradise. Browning of leaves is usually attributed to a watering issue. Too much water with insufficient drainage will cause leaves to yellow/brown and so will a dry parched ground. You need to find the happy medium, which is a consistently moist soil and a regular feeding schedule. Once the plant establishes a deep root system, you wont have to fuss over it too much.

Too much salt--caused by frequent, shallow watering--is the most common cause of this. Low humidity can also cause it, but that is only common east of the Coast Ranges.
The best cure for the former is leaching, i.e. a long, slow soak, to remove the salt from the upper soil layers, followed by a change in watering to a deeper, less frequent schedule.

Salt can really do a number on house plants or potted plants. it becomes so concentrated that it really must be flushed out most of the time. I have killed quite a few with our water softener. We now have by-passes for the outside faucets and that is one solution...
