welcome to GoY :o)
they do better in dappled shade in soil that tends to stay reliably moist, rather than full sun or deep shade. I remove last years leaves as the flowers are starting to open so I can see the flowers better. then I regularly dead head them and after flowering I sometimes [if I remember] give then a light granular feed. then I just leave them to get on with it. Occasionally I will mulch around them with home produce leaf mould but that's all. I find them an undemanding plant but I guess it will depend on the State you are in. I am in on the east coast of Britain, so not too hot [haha] and plenty of rain fall.

They look after themselves here.Ours are in shade in summer from late afternoon, but not shaded in winter, and we get a lot of rain. They would not be happy in dry ground with full hot sun.

I have tried this before, but had no real success--maybe because of my extreme climate! So, I want to see the others' suggestions, too. Lbboodry, you might want to let us know what part of the States you garden in, since that will affect the instructions.
