I have a patch of garden just under a tree that never grows grass very well. I would ideally love to do a rockery here but do not have any idea how to start it, when to plant and what plants would be ideal. I have small children and 2 cats so plants need to be friendly to them. Any help would be great. Diana

A rockery shaded by a tree is a bad idea - most plants that like rockeries are alpines, which love full sun and an exposed situation. Extend the area under the bed by removing the grass back to where it does grow well, and plant shade lovers in the area such as Mahonia aquifolium, Ferns, Tiarellas, Primulas, etc.
