If planting an orchard (uncertain what kind of fruit/nut yet) in heavy clay soil would you want to put a layer of heavy brick rubble at the base of the planting pit to aid drainage?

Loosen the bottom of the planting hole and perhaps incorporate some crushed grit mixed in with the excavated soil. Try not to make the surrounding soil too fertile as the roots will not venture out into the heavier soil. As the season progresses I would give them a mulch to stop the roots from drying out.
