my 2 standard rose trees are in a bad state leaves all brown falling off no sign of life some stems are still green this 2nd year well fed and watered they are about 2ft high they are in a large pot

I'm not a fan of roses in pots. As the stems are still green and no signs of buds, I would take them out of the pots and try them in the open ground. At the end of the day, you've nothing to lose.

The roots may have been attacked by vine weevil grubs. Check the soil for grubs which look like this: http://www.downgardenservices.org.uk/vineweevil.htm
If you find any, immediately treat the soil (and the soil in all other pots). Various products are available:

I'm with Jimmytheone on this - I reckon its the pots that are the problem - other than patio ones, roses generally don't do well in pots, so its probably a much larger, or actually, much deeper pot that's required, or in the ground with them. But without seeing the pots or knowing the measurements, its impossible to say 100%...

Couple of questions - how long have the roses been in the same pots, and precisely how big are the pots, depth and width?
