We had a large conifer in our garden which we had to fell. All that is left is the tree stump. We started a vegetable plot quite near by and I'm wondering whether it is safe to plant near the tree stump, or whether we should avoid it.

Maybe some legumes, just to improve the soil and jump start the decay of the roots. Consider a crop as a pleasant surprise.

You will find the soil poor and impoverished near where the conifer grew so if you want to grow veg you are going to have to improve the soil. Then there is the problem of all the roots which will be near the surface. Personally I wouldn't try to grow veg near a tree stump.
