They're probably feeding on leather jackets just under the surface.

Yep, probably leatherjackets, the larval stage of the crane fly, birds pecking the turf is a good indicator of this problem. More info in the link below, but for specific information on supply and use of nematodes, google Nemesys and select the one for leatherjackets
