What on earth am I doing wrong with radishes ?

Every year I try to grow radishes, and every year they grow about 1 ft tall with very little thin red things underneath.
This year I have 3 - 4 ft long rows and I've managed to rescue just .18 decent ones. The row is a bit crowded so perhaps if I thinned them out a little ?
On the other hand though look at my onions.

Yep, the radishes do look pretty crowded, also a little "stretched", like they have been shaded. Thinning them out, and getting them more sun should help your next crop.

Young thinnings can be used as spicy microgreens in salads, soups, or sandwiches. Older thinnings are a bit chewy, and so may be better for the compost heap.
