Could you tell me which variety of honeysuckle will grow well in a pot on my balcony. I would like a very fragrant one, free flowering, and preferably one with compact growth.

Hello Rosalind. As far as I'm aware, there is no honeysuckle with compact growth. And those that flower prolifically are also those which grow to a very large size.
How big is your balcony, and what is its aspect? Honeysuckles, like most climbers, like their feet in damp shade and their tops in the sun.
