That's the spent flower head. It looks like a magnolia tree so it would be best to buy a small tree and plant it in the ground. However I could be wrong about what it is.

I was about to repeat what Cammomile said. Looks like an unripened seed pod from magnolia. I'm not sure if it's viable off the tree.

I suppose you could try growing from a seed but you would be in your dotage before it got that big!
