I am looking for a fast growing tree to sit in the middle of my lawn (to provide shade eventually) but know nothing about trees, can anyone help please?

Most trees that are fast-growing tend to be big as they don't stop when you want them to. You need to address Rosie's questions first.

What is the eventual size you want for the tree? Are you interested in flowers, fruit, attractive leaves etc?
I second Jimmy's warning about fast growing trees - it is a shame to realise after ten years that you will have to have your tree removed because its too big. How much space have you got?

Thank you so much everyone, I shall find out the measurements of my lawn, it gets very windy up here on the East Coast (UK) and the area i have chosen gets sun all day. Soil - how do I find out the type (sorry I am a Gardening novice).
Hope to have the rest of the answers tomorrow, thank you again

If you have a border already dug anywhere was it easy to dig and rather light and gritty/sandy or was it heavy, tending to remain in lumps when wet? have you seen any rhododendrons (Bushes with big flowers in shades of pink or red) or hydrangeas(not in flower at present but can be red pink or blue) in local gardens? You can google them for pics if you don't know what they are. This should tell us whether your soil is acid or alkaline.

Not without some details, I'm afraid, like where you are, soil type, aspect, windy or sheltered, how big your garden is, how close the tree will be to the house, and so on.
