Can anyone tell me what this strange mushroom type thing is which turned up under one of my bushes? It is about eight inches long. Is it edible?

Don't think of eating unless and until you have a positive I.d.!

It looks quite like a bracket fungus - is there a stump of some sort in the ground there?

A little off subject, but, what is the flower in your profile picture?

it looks like a tulip to me.

I didn't recognize it since tulips are an annual bulb here and get tossed because it is too warm and chilling is a lot of bother.

I have removed the 'triffid' as it scared the children. My profile flower is indeed a tulip looked fantastic. Unfortunately an over enthusiastic helper lost the bulbs when we took them out for the summer displays. I got them from a garden centre.

Can't tell from the photo, especially as it appears to have fallen over. Its unusual to find one fruiting at this time of year. i suggest you contact the Sorby natural History Society in Sheffield which is probably your nearest source of info - they have a very active fungus group. (I went out with them many years ago)But do it quickly because your mushroom won't live very long and if it decays it will be much harder to identify it.(Contact details onGoogle)
