My vegetable crop in raised beds have very poor

My vegetable crop in raised beds has been very poor. This is the first year we have used them and filled them with top soil and manure. However the soil seems to very compacted so assume drainage is not good. The beds are on top of soil where we grew veg last year with a better result. There has not been a massive amount of weeds in the beds. I have just emptied them and going to dig in some Growmore, but has any one any more ideas.
Thanks Liz

it could well be the drainage if its that compact . perhaps after this crop dig in some sharp sand asswell so it does drain better and its more airy excuse my spelling .

Hi Liz and welcome to GoY. I don't think it is fertiliser you need to be adding to your raised beds but something to open the soil up. When you say you used manure was this horse manure and had it been rotted for at least 12 months prior to being dug in?

Thankyou for your replies. We had thought to dig in some sharp sand so will do that. The manure was bought in garden centre, my husband has decided to double dig the beds as well as the sand and hope that that works for next season.

Thanks again

What is the soil like under your raised bed? This will have a baring on how yor veggies grow Acidic, alkaline, humus rich, poor...

Not sure, the soil here is very good for growing azaleas if that is any help.

So it is acidic... I wonder if the manure you dug in was not well rotted? Fresh manure is too strong for growing plants and kills them off.

It is possible it was too strong, is it wise to dig in growmore or just leave them (except for adding sharp sand) and try again next season.

Do not dig in any more fertiliser you need to balance the soil out!

We would use fine grit in preference to the sand but either should work.
