My new clematis is looking decidedly in its death throws. I think it's got mildew but it has crept up on it so quickly that I think it's too late to save. I can also see black spots on the leaves and white spots on the flower buds. Any ideas other than mildew? Also can you please tell me if the pictures are up the right way?

Its no more than six weeks old but this afternoon I asked someone at another garden centre and she said it had black spot and mildew so I'm going to chop it down to the ground and move it to a north facing fence where another clematis is and treat it for black spot next spring.

I think the problem is environmental - too wet, too cold inadequate air circulation.

Well it's a dead parrot now as I've chopped it down and it's going in another spot tomorrow.

I had one with this problem year after year, it always recovered after being cut to the ground - eventually I gave it a dose of Epsom salts spring and six weeks later and for the last 3 years its been fine.

Thank you Ohmelchised, I have to remember to have the iPad the right way round when I take a photo. Drc, I wondered about Epsom salts, I have cut it down in its pot and shall give it a dose before I move it.

It took me a while to work out that the home key had to be on the right for landscape and at the bottom for portrait because it always looked ok when viewed on an iPad.

Yes, difficult because they look up the right way, even in ones gallery on the iPad.

How new is it? I'd take it back to where you bought it from.
