I ordered some epimediums from a online nursery. I bought them to fill an area of moist shade with the info saying moist shade but the RHS site says dry shade and also good for under planting of roses. Have any members experience of growing epimediums. The varieties are sulphureum, rubrum, and warleyense if that helps.

I'd have said dry shade too...

I've certainly grown E. warleyense in damp shade in clay soil - did just fine, though of course, clay can dry out a lot in summer. Haven't tried the other varieties but, although these are recommended for dry shade, they should also be fine in ordinary moisture levels in shade, so long as they're not in waterlogged or frequently wet and soggy soil.

Thanks. They've been supplied as dry bare roots so as I have no dry shade areas I'll have to try them in different areas of the garden.

Swap you some dry shade for a bit of moist shade???

If they were sent to you as bare rooted plants did you keep them watered to start with?

They only arrived a couple of days ago so I soaked them overnight and planted today in pots and a couple straight into the ground. Apparently they will take 4-6 weeks to break dormancy. It seems strange that they will grow (hopefully) and then go over a month or two later.

Where'd you buy them from Barbarak?

It is rather late in the season to be sending out bare rooted plants...

Sorry, missed the last couple of posts. The supplier was Hayloft . I put them in pots and about half have produced top growth. I think I'll over winter them in a cold green house and when there's more growth in the spring plant them out.

Not anon-line supplier I've heard of before, were they on special offer or something?

I bought some Hellebore plants from Hayloft Plants back a few months ago and they're doing really well. I think they're a reputable supplier Barbarak.

I have used Hayloft Plants in the past for a Dianthus collection, all thriving. Contact them Barbarak, the team of ladies are very helpful. They had a stand at the Malvern Spring show last year and were very knowledgeable on plants.
