I have recently got 2 small peach trees, I was advised to use John Innes number 3 compost, however I could not get ant and was told No. 2 would be fine, is this correct? Also how often should I water the trees? they are both approx 1 Mtr. tall, I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you

Hi Pete.

I assume you're planning to plant these in containers, so you need John Innes No 3. I'm surprised you haven't been able to get any, as it's sold everywhere: Garden centres, DIY sheds, chain stores such as The Range, B&M, and so on.

You need to keep them well-watered, so 'how often' will depend on the weather and the size and aspect of your container. Containerised plants dry out much quicker, so you'll need to keep a beady eye on them

They'll be okay in No 2, but that's really intended for potting on of perennials, annuals, vegetables - for longer term planting in pots (as with your peach trees,, shrubs and the like) No. 3 is better - its a richer mix and contains a third more hoof and horn, superphosphate and potassium sulphate compared to No. 2.

Many Thanks for the advice, would it be ok to re-pot theses trees now using number 3?

If you have already potted them up into No. 2, but you did that within the last 6 weeks, yes, it'll be fine to repot into No. 3. If you potted up 3-6 months ago, best wait till dormancy, during winter.

As for watering, make sure the drainage hole/s in the pot are clear and not obstructed so that water can drain away freely, and water regularly, usually when the compost feels just slightly dry to the touch at the surface, and water thoroughly with plenty of water, not just a spray for a minute or two with the spray head on the hose, such that the excess runs out of the bottom. You should, of course, water them in if you repot now...
