A bit of a dilemma. We need some advice please. We are wanting to re-render the outside of the house to get rid of the pebble-dash. However this Hydrangea Petiolaris (excuse spelling - off the top off my head!) has taken about 12 years to reach this height. Apart from cutting it right down to the ground, is there anything I can do? Any chance it would "re-stick" to the wall if we just cut it down to about 10 ft and pulled it back and then laid it against the wall again!

Sadly, no, and bear in mind its clinging very well to some extent because of the pebbledash surface. I'm afraid you'll need to cut it down, probably to about a foot. Looks lovely in the photograph, but so long as the workmen don't destroy it, it should regrow over time.

Sadly most workmen don't give a damn! You may well have to face the fact you are going to lose!

A few years ago I moved house and was a bit maudlin about parting with so many of my cherished plants so someone suggested taking cuttings of my best loved and caring on the next generation in my new garden by way of continuity which I did. It's lovely, keep its genes alive at least. What direction is that wall facing from interest?

The wall is facing east. I thought these would be the answers to the problem - had just hoped that there would be a less drastic solution. The re-fendering won't be happening for a while yet so I'll enjoy it this year. I'll try to cut it right down to a foot or so and protect it as much as I can when the men are working. Thanks a lot.

Alternatively, the hydrangea will eventually cover the entire wall and hide the pebbledash....

Cut it down to flush with the ground and let the workmen do their job so you can get what you paid for. It will come back next year but to get back to what you see now with this beauty will take years of course.

I'm with Steragram - I see no reason to spend money re-rendering when the Hydrangea will eventually cover and therefore hide the existing pebbledash.

But it's the WHOLE house we're re-rendering! One wall left with pebble-dash would look a bit daft.

Agree, Slimdil - even if the plant has been cut down or destroyed, the wall will look great after re rendering - and maybe the pebbledash is past its best anyway. The integrity of your house is more of a priority than any plant ....

Thanks everyone. Going to forget about it until a bit later in the year.

How do I say thanks?
