Cosmos. Is there an easy way to tell if cosmos buds are coming into flower or have flowered. Always seem to have trouble with this. Thanks.

also the buds are firm to the touch and the spent ones are slightly squidgy.
same with dahlia flowers.

Ones that haven't flowered yet are spherical and shiny. Those that have flowered are cup-shaped and dull.
