What kind of conifers, Danny?

Hi Danny. Conifers take all the goodness out of the soil, so I doubt there's much that will grow there, but see what others say.

Some of the hardy ferns would survive but they disappear in winter. You might try something like a Sacrococca or some Butchers Broom.(Add some good soil first) Or if the gaps aren't too high you could try Iris Foetida - I have a big clump of that in exactly that position. If you trimmed the hedge lightly the conifers might regrow anyway but not if you cut back beyond the green part. Mahonia aquifolium might do either and can be kept down to about 18" with regular trimming, don't let it grow bigger though or it will get straggly.

Two of us are lasses Danny! If you go for ferns be careful because most like damp ground for at least some of the year. Long Acre Plants website should be helpful, and the nursery will answer email enquiries too. Dryopteris felis mas is a tough old fern that will survive nearly anywhere. Not evergreen though.
