I have a customer who planted bamboo several years ago in a large 2 Metre width x 3 Metre Length and 1.5 Metre deep Concrete Border area. They have cut the Bamboo down in areas but their is root stumps throughout the border and they have left some Bamboo as a backdrop. They would like me to add a lot of colour to this border with the bamboo in the background. I am having trouble finding flowering plants that will actually take as most things are dying. Any help or would I need to destroy all the Bamboo and get rid of it. The bamboo is a very tall variety.
Many thanks

It doesn't sound as if they removed the roots when they cut the tops down. Its a hopeless situation - depending on the variety of bamboo, it will just constantly encroach wherever it can at the root, and even if you clear out a lot of the root material, its advisable to insert a root rhizome barrier vertically to a depth of 18 inches to keep the bamboo within a designated area. Not to mention that digging out a bamboo is a lot easier to say than do - once planted, its the gift that keeps on giving, very difficult to eradicate completely because some roots may well be under the concrete.
