I have been given clematis and intend to grow it in a container should I spread the roots or just pop it in

If the roots are wrapped tightly round the outside of the rootball, and the rootball itself is hard and solid, tease out the coiled roots a bit. If its a cultivar rather than a species, plant it deep enough for the bottom inch or two of stems to get buried too - those stems will form more roots which gives a better chance of surviving clematis wilt should it occur.
