I have chopped my berberis Darwini down to a stump. it was 50 years old, still beautiful, now I feel so bad about chopping it down - will it ever grow back? ive left a single tall stalk which has the green leaf on the top - will this die as it is from the same root as the other large stems I chopped down?

On plant Berberis darwinii

It might, might not - its the wrong end of the summer to be doing something quite so drastic, any new growth may not have time to harden off properly before winter sets in, but if we have a mild winter, it might be okay. Nothing you can do now, what's done is done - if it doesn't recover, you can always dig out the roots and plant a new one.
