I have a large mature magnolia stellata. I am debating whether to try to top it out and make it be a bush (is that possible?) or else to take out some of the low bushy growth and let it be tree. At present it is huge and high and extensive. I'd quite like it to be one or the other.

I would take the second route and remove lower branches back to the main stems raising the crown. Trying to keep it small will not work that well with Magnolia's and it will reduce the potential for flowers too.
