Cracked pots.i was emptying out some pots with spent summer beddi png and realised that some of my glazed and terracotta pots have cracks in them. Should I use them for winter bedding or will the cracks get worse over winter?

Hard to say - depends how bad the cracks are, and how cold this winter's going to be

Water freezing inside the cracks will make them worse. I use my cracked ones for summer displays :)

Cracked terracotta pots certainly won't survive any bad weather unless you use clear silica gel to glue them back together

Nothing much you can do now. In the future put any undamaged pots away in a place where the temp will not go below freezing before the cold weather comes. Silicon glue will not work because it will not be able to get completely into the cracks unless you make an attempt to spread them open... but that will worsen the damage. Also a good idea to kill any pests and disease in this porous material by washing them in a dilute solution of one part bleach to 9 parts water then rinse and dry before storing.

Can silica gel be used to repair broken pots? Amsterdam, sorry to highjack your question.

Bulba has had some success with

Silica gel is different -its hygroscopic and is used in dehumidifiers. OH says try putting a reasonably generous amount of araldite over the crack and then warm it. Might be worth a try with one of them. Or if you can get hold of some toluene dilute the araldite with it - hopefully in either case it would get sucked into the crack.

I stuck a cracked pot up with super glue & it has been fine for two years now, tho' I will put it in the shed for the winter, complete with Hebe.

Oops not silica gel but the clear liquid silica that is used to bond things together! Sorry... Yes super glue should also work!

Not heard of liquid silica BG - where do get it from? Perhaps its sold under a trade name?

Used in home repairs - thinking about it not a liquid as such, you squeeze out of one of those tube things. Personally I'd just dump the pots :)

Ah. So I Googled it and what I found made me smile - its being sold as a health supplement to improve ageing sagging skin - must give it a go....

Ha ha, that's funny Stera - frankly, I'd need a couple of lassooes and a bunch of string, or the surgeon's knife to improve my sagging skin, I very much doubt any supplement's going to make a difference.
