Star Jasmine with Lavender

Hi all, could anyone advice on the compatibility of Star Jasmine growing up a wall from the same bed as Lavender Hidcote?

Hi John. If the lavender is close to the wall, it will eventually be swamped by the Trachelospermum. Trachelospermum can be quite drastically pruned, but it grows back fast. Do an internet search to see how large they get.

Thank you both. I planted my lavender this afternoon so half way there. Following your comments I'm now having doubts about the Jasmine, it seems like it has the potential to take over...
Any recommendations on an alternative, low maintenance and drought tolerant climber?

Trachelospermum isn't a jasmine at all, but its common name is star jasmine. How close is the gap between your lavender (when its mature size) and where you want to plant the climber, and how tall is the wall?

The bed is 1m by .5m bed which I think will be covered when the lavender matures so there would be no gap. The wall is approx 6m high.

Ah, well there's a problem then - first, no climbing plant should be planted closer than a foot away from the base of a wall or fence, and second, you'd need some clearance between the two once the climber is planted. That said, though, Trachelospermum is usually slow to get going in its first couple of years - by the time its much wider at the base (say 5 years) your lavender will likely need replacing anyway - lavenders get woody and leggy and are usually replaced after 5 to 8 years max. When its time to replant, just choose something smaller, maybe a Helianthemum variety, or Hebe youngii or simply a smaller variety of lavender.

Thanks Bamboo, that's very helpful

I see no reason why one would have a deleterious effect on the other, unless the Trachelospermum was allowed to clamber over the lavender, thereby depriving it of light.
