several of our allotment holders have problems growing carrots even having fine soil is it possible to inform us from the start how to prepair the soil ? what kind of manure if any is best

My carrots don't even germinate so they never even find out what sort of soil there is...Good luck Frank-hope you do better next year.

Hi Frank and welcome to GoY. Carrots need a fine, if possible slightly sandy tilth; the last thing they need is manure as there is no way this will ever been fine enough for the carrots to grow well... Any stones, however small, will cause the carrots to split. Keep them well watered and protected against carrot root fly.
