These have flowered all ummer in a smallish pot outside. I want to keep them so should I keep in pot amd plant in the ground after the last frost next year, or plant them in the ground now?

Did you mean to add a photo or forget to give the name of the plants?

Sorry for the confusion - I had been reading comments about alstroemeria and wrongly assumed my query related to them.

'Sallright, Byll! The Alstroemerias that I am familiar with wouldn't be fully hardy in cold climates, so if that is where you garden, you would definitely want to keep the pot sheltered over the winter, and bring it out again in the spring. In areas with more moderate winters, such as the Pacific Northwest or southern England and Ireland, you should be able to just plant them out. In warmer climates still, Alstroemeria adopts a different strategy, and grows and blooms in the winter and spring, and goes dormant in the summer. If you can tell us where you garden, we could tell you more.

I live in Chislehurst, about 20 miles south of London, so it looks as though I can plant them out. They are still fully in bloom though and if I leave them until they are finished, the earth may be too hard. Any suggestions?

If your soil freezes more than a cm deep, it's too cold for most Alstroemerias to survive the winter without shelter.

« Hi, I have just read that I should have pruned my mum's flowering cherry tree...
What are "these", Byll?
