Hey everyone. I recently saw this growing alongside my backporch and was about to kill it, thinking it was poison oak, or something similar. My boyfriend stopped me, however, swearing it's a Maple tree. What do you think it is??

Agree, sadly, needs to be removed. If it is a field type maple it will cause a huge amount of damage to your property.

Since my bf seems to like it, I will tell him he needs to move it. Thank you, he knows I like trees.

It looks like a sweet gum seedling to me. It won't grow as fast or as large as most maple species, but it is still likely to damage your home. It can make a beautiful ornamental tree, but it still needs to moved at least 20 feet away from any pavement or structures. Since this one seems to have indifferent fall color--the main reason for planting one--I would discard it.

I suspect in trying to lift far too many of the roots will get broken in any case and it won't survive.

Quite likely, especially if the roots are wrapped around a porch foundation, or suchlike.

Hank, its all in the mind of the beholder you know - 'bf' must stand for boy friend it seems to me, not whatever you were thinking (bloody fool by any chance, not something worse I hope?) - boyfriend is mentioned in the question. It never crossed my mind it stood for anything other than boyfriend... but maybe I'm wrong;-))

ha ha, I wouldn't worry about it Hank, at least Backforthe2nd time has an explanation of what you said, and that it was a mistake...

Bamboo is right, It is "Boyfriend" lol. Hank, yes you did lol. Either way, my "boyfriend" said he would move it. He also thinks it's too close to the house.

It does look like a maple leaf, but it doesn't really matter, because unless you can lift the paving stones, dig it up and move it, it can't grow there anyway - left in situ, it will lift all the paving as it grows (if it manages to grow properly anyway) and it looks like a window or something directly behind it - if that's the house, its way too close and must be killed off.
