There is a large silver birch at the bottom of a neighbour's garden. Each winters evening the higher branches are scattered with bright green bio luminous lights. It's hard to know if they flash, or if it's the wind blowing the branches. It's the first year I've noticed them. They are very bright and do not seem to move. They are too high, so an investigation is not possible. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is creating the light.

many fungi fluoresce so that might be the cause.
or is there an artificial light in the neighbours garden shining on the branches?

Could be a scattering of poorly aimed decorative laser lights which some people illuminate their houses with for Christmas.

Very likely, Loosestrife. I'm surprised that the FAA hasn't been yelling very loudly about them this year.

I have seen foxfire and in my experience it is a rather dull bioluminescent fungi and not at all " very bright", but, in a dark wooded area it could seem to be bright if you are seeing it for the first time.

Could you take a photo with a zoom lens? Rather a challenge but it would be interesting.
When you say they are on the branches but don't seem to move I wonder how they stay stationery in the wind.
