I wouldn't have thought that they would cause a problem by tainting your potatoes. If you are still concerned then I would open them up and leave them outside to the elements for a week and the smell of plastic will disappear.

my neighbour uses them and after a couple of days she says it doesn't smell and the spuds don't taste odd. She uses them every year.
