Is this bracket fungus ? I found it on the ground on the green outside our bungalow. It was under a very ancient Ash tree. It is very black and solid.

There is a black fungus of the bracket type which afflicts Ash trees. Not sure of the name, but there is a lot of it on one of the trees along our lane.

I've seen this on exhibit at the Guggenheim.

This formation is exactly like the Oak Bracket on our red oak which resulted in us having to have it taken down.
I say the formation because ours wasn't black but started out sandy then gradually turned darker brown.
