We've had a large sycamore removed and stump ground but there are several small ones round it probably coming from the rootstock but multistemmed so nowhere to put SBK. (cut down almost to ground level)Digging them out would be very difficult but there might be no alternative.. I want to plant a short lonicera hedge there. Are we likely to get more suckers coming from the old rootstock?

Oh dear. i was afraid you'd say that. They are the dandelions of the tree world aren't they...

Ash is also a contender!

Definitely sycamore Arbuthnot - we do have both, so no danger of confusing them.

I read arb. comment to mean that ash is also a contender for the weed of the tree world. :o)
we have lots of seedlings of both this year.

Oh yes, I see now. We don't have probs with ash - don't know why- just the odd one here and there.

If you can't drill, simply cut the stems, and immediately paint the cut surface with SBK, maybe stick on a piece of duct tape to keep the chemical from washing off.

You're right, Seaburn, I did mean that Ash was a contender for dropping seeds. If you've got lots of ash seedlings then I do feel for you. At least our problem ash from next door was cut down. The trunk is still there though so it won't be long before I shall have to be sneaky and cut off as much as I can reach over the fence or - spray with weedkiller! That's unneighbourly though, as well as possibly illegal.

Duct tape is a good idea!

Duct tape? How do I use that over a six foot fence?
26 Mar, 2017
It wouldn't work over a six foot fence...because it is un-neighborly and illegal! Better to bring a bundt cake over to your neighbor--or beer and pretzels, depending on the neighbor--and see if you can sit down and discuss a strategy to deal with something that concerns you both.

Lol Arbuthnot. Its a different problem altogether. When its your neighbour's tree I don't think there's much you can do but learn to love it...On the plus side they are a really beautiful shape in winter against a blue sky...

After being cut down to a tall stump? Not so much...more like Hogwarts' "Whomping Willow", then!
26 Mar, 2017
Its been stump ground level with the soil so nothing to whomp with!

Lots of misdirected talk here - Steragram,I believe Tugbrethil's comment about 'whomping willow', whilst in response to you, was a reference to Arbuthnot's next door Ash, which has still got a trunk, after you commented how beautiful a shape Ash makes against a blue sky in winter....

True, Bamboo, and sorry, Steragram! I need to get in the habit of referring more to what I am speaking of, and who I am speaking to.
Some day, me learn talk real good! :)

You bet, Stera! Me good teach, too!...Watched too many "It's About Time" episodes in my misspent youth, apparently. :D

If you've got some already, then yes, you are likely to get more. Unfortunately, you need to dig down below the topgrowth, pushing the soil aside, to see if you can find chunkier roots that you can drill into and apply SBK.
