Perennial climbers to cover 6 foot panels of garden fence.
Hi, I am based in the West Midlands and have a north facing garden fence with heavy clay based soil.
I would like to cover the fence panels with a variety of fast growing flowering plants.
Any advice much appreciated.

They look like concrete fence posts - difficult to affix trellis or clematis mesh, one or other of which you will need for most climbers - hydrangea anomala does well in shadier spots and is self clinging though.

Hi the border is about 15" deep. It does get some early morning sun but not lots

Then I suggest you follow Bamboo's advice re plants

I grow the rose Golden Showers quite successfully on a north facing wall. Or, failing flowers, what about some variegated evergreen shrubs which brighten up a dark area? You could clip them neatly against the fence.

Another plant to consider is Garrya elliptica 'James Roof' - its a freestanding plant so won't need trellis, but prefers to be against a wall or fence, and can be trained against it.

consider some of the evergreen honeysuckles. they haven't needed a lot of support against our fence. OH drilled concrete posts in our last garden and used eyes and wires. that worked for us and the current owners still have clematis on them.

Pyracanthas can be trained to be self supporting. Some evergreen berberis too.

Hi Barry and welcome to GoY. Just how deep is the border in front of that fence as it looks very narrow to me... Does the area get any sunlight at all?
