My Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana have grown nearly 2 metres and nearly 80cms thick hedge

Australia

My Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana have grown nearly 2 metres tall and about 80cms thick hedge. I was told they would not grow more than 1.50m tall. But they have shot up over 10 years. Can they be trimmed ? How to trim them ? I would not want to have anybody trim them too much. Please help.

Hi Annisetta and welcome to GoY. Could you add a photo to your question please showing the actual hedge. The only Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana is a very dwarf conifer that grows to, perhaps, a metre but usually less it also isn't normally considered as a hedging shrub and I wonder if this is actually what you have.

That was my thought SBG... mis-sold plants.

'Aurea Nana' grows larger in warm climates than it does in cold ones--and guess who writes the descriptions! Also, 'Beverlyensis', which is a much larger variety, has been sold as 'Aurea Nana'. 'Raffles' is a more reliably dwarf variety, though it may be hard to find. The slightly larger 'Westmont' is easier to find, but it is a different texture, and it suffers when the temperature goes over 40ยบ. I suspect that it is actually a different species of Thuja.
