My wisteria had gone totally rampant from neglect and was threatening to dislodge the guttering above it. My nephew has just cut back the offending growth and cleaned and replaced the guttering and we have put in wires and trained all the shoots that we can to go sideways. I fear though that the upwards ones (which are not easy to reach) will try to go upward again. I am 80 and newly widowed and ladders are not a good idea for me so I want to leave the sideways growth but stop the upwards shoots from regrowing IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN PUT ON THE CUT ENDS OF UPWARD STEMS SO THEY STOP GROWING BUT IT MUST BE SOMETHING THAT WILL NOT DAMAGE THE SIDEWAYS SHOOTS?

Many thanks for the advice though not what I was hoping to hear!! I don't want to lose it altogether so will try cutting those upward branches nearer to their origins.

I'm afraid not. What you could consider is paying someone to come and take it out completely - alternatively, remove the upward growing branches altogether from where they originate lower down, if you can.
