This is a wilting clematis piluu but not clematis wilt I think. I noticed the buds wilting last week before the cold snap and when it didn't revive with more water I cut about a third off. It's still continuing to Walt but has a strong new shoot that's Ok. It's next to a small non flowering wisteria. Anybody any ideas for the cause of its sudden death. Shall I cut the wilting stuff back to the ground and leave the new shoot?

Hi, it certainly sounds like Clematis wilt, and as a group 2 will be susceptible to wilt, the good news is that it's rarely fatal, remove the affected shoots, and spray with a copper fungicide, it should survive, Derek.

The same thing has happened to my The President, Barba. I followed the same actions as you but I think it's a goner as there are no signs of new growth. Good luck with yours.
And this year too, my three year old Montana started off by having tiny signs of new growth then completely died. Seems like it's not a good year for clems.

All I can say is that I lost my Clematis Montana when it suddenly wilted & died. It never grew back.
