what happens if a cherry tree is not planted deep enough due to solid ground beneath?

It's prone to falling over.

And certainly won't 'do well'. The tree needs to be plants at the level it had previously been plant at and needs to be able to put its roots right down into the soil.By 'solid ground' do you mean something there than soil?

As in a hard clay layer, or bedrock?
