I saw a lilac like plant yesterday. Smaller leaves further away from the flowers & smaller flowers. Very fragrant. Blinking big bush/tree towering way over my head.Leaves were bit furry 1/2 inch to 1 1/2. Flower clusters over 1 inch.
Not got a clue. Any ideas?

Different form of lilac, such as Syringa palibin? Otherwise, how about a photograph?

Does Palibin get that tall? I hope mine doesn't

Six feet tall, Steragram, although there's an 7 foot one in a garden near me...

Crumbs. Does it take kindly to being cut back? The photos I've seen have been of attractive roundish compact bushes.
Mind you by the time its as tall as that I'll probably be in no position to worry about it... Does it stay bushy or develop a trunk?

Looks more like a bush, though I bet there's woody trunk in the middle - the one that's growing in one of my client's garden I relentlessly hack back after its flowered in attempt to keep it in check because there's insufficient room where they planted it originally and they won't let me remove it. Which I'd dearly love to do, I don't like the colour of the flowers on palibin.

Buddleja davidii won't flower until July.
Small furry leaves means it could be one of Buddleja crispa varieties - B. sterniana or B. farreri - both very fragrant. Some information/photos here to compare:
