We have a very old privat hedge the whole length of our house. I guesstimate it has been there since the house was built in 1934. It looks as if it is dying at one end & I notice that some of the leaves further along look as if some of the leaves are shrivelled. It is regularly cut throughout the summer. Anyone any idea why after all this time it would start deteriorating.

Do you feed, mulch and water regularly? If yes and its still dying then I would suggest that even though we expect our shrubs to go on forever, this isn't the case. Maybe its just come to end of its useful life?

These hedges keep on going and going and many have seen a generation or two of property owners so I don't think age has anything to do with it. Maybe a few photos! one at a distance and one that is a close up, posted could give a clue to what is happening. Perhaps a disease.

Hi, welcome to GoY, when you say it's cut regularly throughout the summer, how often is regularly ?, I have a privet hedge about the same age as this, which I cut round about the end of july, after it's flowered, and then again about the end of september, I never feed, mulch or water, I often wish that mine would die off, then I would have an excuse to remove it, and replace it with something a lot nicer, Derek.

ours did this and it was unfortunately honey fungus. we removed the healthy ones up to a metre away from the affected ones. this saved the rest of the hedge.
