Dare I ask 3 quickies at once ? Doubtless someone will let me know.
1. I have a supply of comfrey that I am cutting up small and adding it to my compost bin. Is there a better use for this ?
2. I have 3 Tiny Tim toms which I gather only grow 18 ins tall. Do these need a large pot or will a half size suffice ?
3. Is there a best time of day to water veg or is anytime ok

1) and 2) I don't know the answer. 3) Evening is generally best to water plants as there is less heat for the water to evaporate, nightfall means that there is less/ no chance of the leaves becoming burnt by the sun. Having said that if a plant is flagging and needs a drink do it rather than lose it is my motto!

Thanks very much Crv, very helpful.

Hi Hank you could make a comfrey 'tea' if you have anything to feed it on but it is pretty stinky! Otherwise keep adding to the compost.

I'd still plant your tomatoes in full size pots.

If you do water during the day and it is sunny make sure you don't get any water on the leaves as they will get burnt if you do.

Thanks M, I should have said I have comfrey tea, including a carton I found the other day dated 2011 ! Wonder if it's still ok.
Have transferred the T.T. toms into a full sized pots, and will be careful what and how I water

M, you fooled me at one point about comfrey tea. You state " you can make comfrey tea IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO FEED IT ON".
I just cut the leaves up in a container and cover it with water. On what else must I feed it ? Or have I misunderstood ?

I have a 2600 litre tank which I use for collecting rain water. This is gravity fed to my 30ft x 20ft polly tunnel.
I collect the comfrey leaves and crunch them up and put them in the tank. I harvest the leaves all the time they are growing. By replenishing through the season my plants give me a big thank you by growing healthy and big. Any size tank would do the same. I suppose this is what others call tea.

So is there no point at all in putting the cut up comfrey stems in the compost bin as well ? Just keep the leaves and chuck the stems away ?
I too have a very large storage tank and your ( E.D.) idea sounds good.

No Hank I meant make comfrey tea if you have any plants you can feed it with. Keep putting the stems in the compost.

Thanks again M, I threw numerous stems in the green bin earlier today, but on seeing your latest input I fished them out, chopped'em up and transferred them to the compost bin.
I'm so pleased I asked this question - I 've learnt a lot.

If you ever sprain anything comfrey can be used as an effective compress.

Thanks Sue, I've actually tried it out more than once and it worked particularly well on one occasion, much to my surprise.

Great - lots of those old remedies are very effective. I just wish I'd remembered it when I last sprained my ankle, lol.

How do I say thanks?
